ARKANSAS MEDICAID PREPARED TO ACCEPT FRACTIONAL MILEAGE ELECTRONIC FILES
A recent Final Rule published in the Federal Register concering fractional mileage billing is not expected to create adverse claims processing for Arkansas Medicaid. While the final rule affects only Medicare claims, crossovers to Medicaid could have caused delays in processing or denial of claims if the State's systems were not capable of handling 1/10th of mile decimal amounts.
The ArAA contacted Arkansas Medicaid upon adoption of the Final Rule. According to Medicaid officials, the crossover claims will be accepted and will process based on the amount of allowed mileage paid by Medicare. On straight Medicaid only claims, providers may continue to round up (0.1 miles = next whole mile) or they may opt to report fractional mileage as for Medicare.
It is expected that Medicaid will likely adopt the fractional mileage requirement later in 2011, but no time table has been issued at this time. The ArAA will be working closely with Medicaid to clearly develop and communicate any mileage policy changes.
EMS agencies are encouraged to contact their software vendors or billing agents for clarification on how mileage will be processed beginning January 1, 2011.
