Providers have reported seeing retroactive payments from claims with dates of service January 1, 2010 through July 6, 2010. You will recall that the expiration of the 2% urban and 3% rural bonus payments along with the expiration of the super rural bonus meant that effective January 1, 2010 ambulance providers' reimbursement rates were reduced by these amounts. A "fix" was passed by Congress in March but it has taken a significant amount of time for CMS to issue repayment instructions to its Medicare Ambulance Contractors (MAC).
All ambulance services are encouraged to check their current EOB's for proper payment rates and to double check retro payments for proper adjustment amounts. There is no need to refile the claims as this is an automatic adjustment.
If you notice improper payment amounts on the bulk of the claims, please let the ArAA know so that we can get with the MAC to resolve the problem.
